Taos to Tennessee

Dirty Linen

by Michael Parrish

Tish Hinojosa started out the way most singer-songwriters do, with a relatively small-budget, independently released cassette featuring many of the originals and covers featured in her stage set. In Hinojosa's case, the recording, made in Taos in 1987 with a few local musicians, was very good, and has now been released on CD by Austin label Watermelon. About half the material is Hinojosa's, including songs like "Amanecer" and "Let Me Remember" that made it onto her subsequent A&M album, Homeland. The covers include a bright rendition of Peter Rowan's "Midnight Moonlight" and a lovely version of Irving Berlin's "Always," sung in both English and Spanish. Although a few rough edges are evident, Taos to Tennessee is a debut recording that has worn quite well indeed.
