Tish's Most Valuable Players:
Remembering Gary Primich (1958-2007)

A wonderful musician, artist, harmonica player and person, Gary Primich passed away last month in Austin, Texas. Although I had not seen him in a few years, I will always remember him as not only one of the best and most professional musicians I ever had the opportunity to work with, but also as one of the most contagiously happy people I ever met.

I was introduced to him by my co-producer, band leader, and friend of many years, Marvin Dykhuis. Gary was a member of a group of Milwauke/Chicago musicians and friends that had migrated to Austin in the mid-80's and played around town in several creative configurations. When we recorded "Homeland" in 1989, we knew just who would add a great musical touch of the harmonica to that record. He also played on "Culture Swing", then went on the road with us as both road manager and band member.

He had a keen ability of looking as if he had just stepped out of the shower, even under the heavy pressure and responsibility of his job. And he always played his instrument with a passion of those who really love to play. He made us laugh with his flip and humorous mid-western attitude. However, at a time when I was in need, he was as sensitive as a friend could be. I really admired and respected his prolific work and his dedication to his craft.

We lost a wonderful friend and musician too soon.
