My early days were spent in observation and constant awareness of the busy life that surrounded me. My Mexican born-father was widowed in ’43 or so, left with seven children, (6 girls, 1 boy). My mother, newly arrived from Mexico with a 2 year old son, met him and took on the challenge of re-building a family. Five more daughters were born to them. I was the last one. This working class ensemble saw and experienced all there was through the changing times in San Antonio, Texas. My mother’s strong conviction, and lively character and my father’s gentle low key demeanor, and both their constant labor, saw us through an education neither of them ever had. Maria “Cuquita” Coronado Hinojosa in San Antonio in the late 40′s with my brother Jose, (who was born in Mexico), and her new additions. I love how they dressed just to take a bus down town. Being severely asthmatic as a child (and continue to be although medical science has made great strides) was sometimes frightening, but allowed me some privileges such as staying home reading and enjoying solo time with my mother (a real luxury in a large family). Frequently, we were visited [...]

When I was a little girl in San Antonio, I wanted to fly to the moon. My growing up time in the U.S.A. encouraged this idea. This was around 1960 and the dawn of the era of NASA, when space travel and all its possibilities opened ahead of us like a telescope. A couple of children's books from these days fanned the flame of my interest.

Hi friends and happy 2011! I hope this greeting finds you well. It’s been a few weeks since the big holiday get-togethers and celebrations. Did you make a resolution? They seem to be an important point of conversation around this time of year. I have an idea that it’s not a good idea to jump right into resolutions at the very start of the New Year. I feel that it’s too easy to break them by starting abruptly, especially just after the chaos that December in general seems to invite. I was reminded of this in an email from Austin singer-songwriter Matt the Electrician, whose first official “newsletter” comprised of a short notice announcing that his New Year’s resolution was to write a newsletter in 2011. This done, he could rest easy that the “resolution” was accomplished. Now he could move on to accomplish more things that he could feel good about. It seems to help the situation, when you can check something off “the list”. I am beginning to believe that little accomplishments are a big help in tackling bigger ones. I myself have a long list of self-betterment resolutions. To give myself credit, I am working on accomplishing [...]

Hola and greetings to all! I hope you are doing fine. I have been busy and enjoying autumn. The summer in Hamburg was beautiful and warm. I got a new bike in June and had a great time riding around town with good lights, brakes, and easy shifting gears! What a difference! I was ok with my old one, given to me by a friend, who moved away, one of those big old practical ones. I like those older bikes and am certainly not a racer. However, for safety sake, I decided to shop a little because there were some things going wrong with it, and fixing it to my needs was going to cost anyway. This is quite a friendly bicycle town, and there is so much to see and so accessible by bike. Also on the subject of bikes, the city introduced rental bikes all over town this year, and it seems to be a big hit. What a great idea! In August, my husband had his special mostly yearly BIG birthday party. A crew of family and friends worked hard to put it on, but it was worth the work. Scores of people showed up to enjoy [...]

Hola to All, Just a (hopefully) little mid-summer note of salutation. As usual, time just seems to be flying. July was a record heat month this year, just as this year’s winter was a record cold one in Germany. I was in the U.S. in May and June. A smart thing to plan road dates that miss the heat of high summer. My brief but wonderful tour and visit to the States was great. I am really glad that everything went well and all the shows were nicely attended and lots of fun. One of the highlights for me was a side trip my husband and I took to Bald Head Island, North Carolina, to visit a long-time friend of mine. She was one of my main influences in learning to play the guitar when we were both freshmen in high school. It was so nostalgic and fun to sing old Simon & Garfunkel songs and Spanish ballads we used to sing together way back when. Bald Head Island is a beautiful place, we had some great beach and bicycle time too. Looking out at the peaceful ocean from there made me think of Texas and the sad event of [...]

Hi Everyone, Although the air is still on the wintry side, it is nice to see a little more sunshine with the longer days of springtime. I hope you are enjoying it, wherever you are. We had a particularly icy and cold winter in Hamburg this year. It was really fascinating to see the Alster lake frozen over. Something I had not seen in the six winters I have been here. So the locals say, 1997 was the last time that had happened. People were pretty excited about it as they took to the lake, slipping and sliding, taking pictures, and of course, enjoying wurst, beer and Glühwein. Great winter scenes. It fascinates me that winter can do things like freeze huge bodies of water, and can also create tiny delicate patterns in tree branches that shine like crystals in the short appearances of daylight. There is something to love in every season. I got a nice break from winter when I went to Memphis and to Austin in late February and early March. In Memphis, I attended Folk Alliance, which is a music conference that brings people from every facet of Folk and Americana music together for showcases, business, [...]

Happy Holidays! Feliz Navidad! Schöne Feiertage! I hope you are doing well. It is early December. I just had my 54th birthday! Holidays are here! YEA!! I really do like having a birthday at this time. In early December, people are excited about “the season”. Christmas lights are all working, decorations are fresh and shiny, we are thrilled at the sight of tamales and holiday food, and people are in shopping mode (a plus for early December birthdays!). Every year now seems to be packed with more and more memories and at a quicker pace. I don’t know if this is just my life or our times. From where I stand, 2010′s months look like they will fill so predictable, easily, and quickly, and before long, 2011 will be upon us. Looking back over the past eleven months, however, I see that time doesn’t make it that easy on us, and most of what happened this year was not predictable. On 2009′s calendar, some days seem like they were years ago, and some like they were just yesterday. Hundreds of big and little, happy and sad, planned, and certainly many unplanned events have brought us lots to reflect upon, news [...]

Uli Rademacher is from Hamburg, Germany, where he was part of a thriving folk music scene in the 1960′s. Though he mostly concentrated on his “day job” later on, he continued to play through the years, most notably with German songer/songwriter legend Franz Josef Degenhardt, and since his retirement he has been very busy playing in blues, folk and skiffle groups around the northern German region. I was out looking for live music in Hamburg in 2005 and found him hosting a Scottish/Irish music night at a club. I was impressed with his acoustic guitar, harmonica, and his tin whistle playing. He has traveled and played back-up with me at many European performances. In spring 2009 he accompanied Peter Rowan and me on a twenty show tour of the Netherlands.
