featuring
Susana Baca, Stella Chiweshe & Tish Hinojosa

An evening of international folkloric music, celebrating the diversity of contributions by female musicians, worldwide

Susana Baca (Peru): Growing up in a country that denied it's African heritage, Susana struggled to bring together the remnants of Peru's African past with the current music traditions of Peru. Afro-Peruvian music is now recognized around the world, part in thanks to her work and her brilliant realization of music itself.

"her cool, distinct voice...has the strength to create its own tradition" - New York Times

Stella Chiweshe (Zimbabwe): Hailed today as one of the world's greatest mbira (metal pronged hand piano) players, Stella Chiweshe overcame formidable obstacles in her male dominated society to earn the right to play this sacred instrument. In shattering the long-standing barrier against women in this music, Stella has helped open one of the most beautiful musical cultures in Africa not only to women of her country, but also to people all over the world.

"the Mbira Queen of Zimbabwe" - The Beat

Tish Hinojosa (Texas): Tish Hinojosa found her inspiration in the jumble of south Texas, where Mexican immigrants, European descendants, and Native Americans intertwine to create the rich, cultural fabric of the American Southwest. As a child of Mexican immigrants in the border region, Tish has combined her cultural heritage with the American influences of folk, rock, and country to create a voice that is truly her own.

"tremendously gifted and uncommonly diverse singer-songwriter"
